Developer's Artistic Statement

"Somewhere in the South was created to start a dialogue about the term “Survival Horror”. I hoped that people would strongly think about that term while experiencing this project, because it's a different take on the entire genre.

Usually when the words “Survival Horror” spring up, one might expect a haunted mansion filled with robot vampires or post apocalyptic zombie mayhem. While I don't want to imply that this won't happen in the not too distant future (especially robot vampires), Somewhere in the South actually represents a true survival horror game that was played in real life. I use the term “game” appropriately, because to some slave hunters in the era of slavery, they thought of it as “game”. A sport of hunting down humans as if they were animals.

Fundamentally, in a morbid sense, Somewhere in the South represents one of the first Survival Horror games. Of course, Somewhere in the South fails on all levels of truly capturing the true awfulness of what the slaves went through, because it can never be recreated with justice. However, at the very least, I hope this experience makes people look at the term “Survival Horror” with a different meaning."

Somewhere in the South is a title featured at IndieCade 2017.

About Somewhere in the South

Somewhere in the South is a survival-horror experience taking place on the Underground Railroad. In a frigid September 1859, through the eyes of a runaway slave, the player must guide her through the vast network of barns, covered wagons and safe-houses that funneled slaves to freedom. Critical and moral decisions must be made without wavering, effecting the outcome of not only the slave's well being, but others as well. This isn't a game or simulation. This is a horrific experience.
