About EXO ONE
Go on a surreal interstellar journey and slide, roll and glide across a multitude of exoplanets, using an alien craft that redefines the laws of gravity. Follow the story of mankind's first, ill-fated mission outside the solar system.
Traverse a range of exoplanets from the ground, to the sky, clouds and above, using a strange yet simple, geometric alien craft that transforms from a rolling sphere to an ellipsoid glider. Focus is on creating a smooth, flowing and sliding ambient experience across a variety of exoplanets.
EXO ONE's movement mechanic blends traditional movement methods with gravity manipulation, and allows players to roll and slide around on planet surfaces or take to the air and glide. The player controls the alien craft's gravity level in order to build and maintain momentum, sliding down hill sides at high gravity, and then flying up and off into the sky in low gravity. Transform into a glider to gain and maintain altitude and fly through the clouds, then transform back into a sphere upon touch down with the surface.
A voice over narrative tells the story of humankind's first manned, exoplanetary mission outside the solar system. Told by a distant future historian, it comes with all the mysteries that come with such vast passages of time.
EXO ONE draws inspiration from science fiction and fact, as well as real NASA programs like Kepler (exoplanet discovery) and Mars Pathfinder. Jay (the lead developer) also has a history dotted with influences ranging from dirt track racing to surfing, skating, yoga, meditation and games such as Dear Esther, Proteus, Journey and Tiny Wings.
