Developer's Artistic Statement
CHKN, Katapult’s first game, fills what we felt was a gap in the sandbox genre. Sandbox games revolve around building objects or structures, or terraforming land. With CHKN, we wanted to add life itself into the mix. We started with building blocks—a familiar mechanic—that resulted in creatures exhibiting unique behaviors and personalities, depending on which blocks were used. We wanted players to be able to create a living, breathing thing that has emotions, reactions and feelings.
Early in development, we knew we wanted to encourage creativity and experimentation, something that our favorites in the genre do so well. But we also wanted a make a game where our creations reacted with emotion to us as much as we reacted to them. Life Blocks make digital creatures with emergent behavior. Creations behave in unexpected and surprising ways. Just like they would in real life.
The core creature building mechanic had to be super easy and fun to use if we were to expect players to take the time to build anything, let alone form an emotional attachment with what they’ve created. It not only had to be easy, we wanted the player to have as much control as possible in the process. This meant no pre-canned animations. Third, we wanted creatures to be unique and different from other creatures visually. A chicken should look different from a giraffe. And the assembly of a variety of different Life Blocks into one creature should still result in an animal with a distinct look and personality, not turn into “visual mud.”
Our players love to show us their creations, as well as give us feedback and suggestions. We are excited to have them along for this crazy ride as we continue to develop CHKN.
